Senior Research Associate – Engineer: Smart Cities

Position Description:
This position functions as the technical expert in the area of Smart City and Smart Mobility; performs research on projects at the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) that are related to Smart City initiatives, Smart Mobility research, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS); recognizes and promotes the interdisciplinary nature of CAR activities across multiple departments and research centers; collaborates with the Smart mobility program manager at the university, as well as, with Columbus city leaders and other central Ohio civic leaders; supports CAR faculty and staff in research programs related to smart mobility, transportation systems, and data analytics systems; plans, conducts, and demonstrates activities for Smart City and Smart Mobility programs; supervises students and mentors other researchers on projects; develops and maintains research facilities; assists with identifying new research programs; performs project administration, coordination, and management functions.
Pay Range: $65,000 to $72,000
Research Associate 2 – Engineer: Powertrain

Position Description:
This position conducts research on dynamic systems modeling, optimization and control with strong focus on automotive engine and powertrain systems; works with other team members and industry partners to develop model-based optimization and control algorithms to improve performance of automotive engine components and subsystems (turbo/superchargers, air path, fuel path, combustion), conventional and hybrid drivetrains (transmissions, electric motors/generators), energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors); designs linear and nonlinear observers using established methods (e.g., Kalman filter, sliding-mode observer); implements control algorithms in Rapid Prototyping ECUs and verifies experimentally on engine test bench; assists graduate students, visiting scholars and other colleagues with their research; extracts and analyzes experimental and modeling results and prepares technical reports for sponsors reviews; prepares and presents papers/reports; writes, edits and/or approves progress and technical reports for sponsors; edits research results for publication and presentation; assists in identifying, writing and preparing proposals to pursue new funding opportunities; develops task lists, time lines, and budgets for research projects; plans and coordinates meetings with industrial partners; conducts internal and external research meetings.
Pay Range: $54,000 to $62,000
